Darren Sharper — a former NFL star — has been accused of raping a Miami Beach woman. According to the woman, she and a friend were drinking when they met the former NFL safety and his cousin. The woman said that Sharper took her and her friend back to a condo in Miami Beach and that she couldn’t remember much of what happened there. Police said that, according to what the woman told them, her friends said she was heard yelling “No!” and “Stop!” from behind a closed bedroom door.
The woman claimed that this event happened in late 2012. She was unsure of the dates. She described herself as being extremely intoxicated at the time of the incident. The woman stated that she went to a treatment center a week after the incident, however, she did not file a complaint with the police at the time.
This woman is coming forward shortly after other rape charges were filed against Sharper in another state. In that case, he has pleaded not guilty and has been released from custody on a $1 million bond. Sharper was also told by the judge, in that case, to stay away from nightclubs while the cases were pending.
Sex crimes, and rape, in particular, are difficult cases. There is a lot of emotion on both sides of the case, and a lot at stake for the person accused. Sometimes, details can be difficult to remember and there can be a fine line between consensual behavior and illegal behavior. Furthermore, the evidence is often in the form of he-said, she-said testimony.
These challenges are important for those accused of rape in Florida to understand. With the right help, it may be possible to maneuver around these challenges and successfully fight the charges.
