Same-sex couple Heather Brassner and Megan Lade may have wanted 15 minutes of fame, but maybe not for this reason. They are the first same-sex divorce to be granted in Florida. They were originally married in Vermont but then moved to Florida where they then sought a divorce. The judge who granted the divorce was also for accepting same-sex marriage licenses from out of state. Because they were married in Vermont, Florida would have to recognize their marital status and then grant a divorce. This was a success and now same-sex people can both get married and divorce in Florida. Now, every state recognizes same-sex marriage because, on June 26, 2015, the Supreme Court voted in favor of same-sex marriage.
What To Expect
Whether you are in a same-sex marriage or heterosexual marriage, the divorce is still the same. You still have to file paperwork. You still have to discern between property and assets. You still have to consider child support or spousal support. You also have to consider plans moving forward with the children. The divorce outcome is still the same no matter who you are married to.
