Relationships can sometimes go badly due to a breakdown in communication or allegations of infidelity. Domestic violence is a big issue that may sometimes go unnoticed. However, sometimes these charges are leveled on innocent people who may be victims of false accusations by a spouse or significant other.
At least 11 different individuals were arrested on Valentine’s Day and forced to spend some time in the Broward County Jail on charges related to domestic violence. A 26-year-old man was Tasered by police officers after allegedly beating up a friend at his apartment. The man had accused his friend of being in a text message relationship with his fiancée, and he allegedly became violent.
The 26-year-old man also allegedly refused to allow both his fiancée and friend to leave the apartment after the supposed altercation. It’s important to note, however, that in court the woman denied having a relationship with the friend.
Other domestic violence incidents that occurred during the week included a 22-year-old man, who was arrested for allegedly punching his girlfriend and then dragging her across a concrete floor.
Domestic violence is a very real issue; however, not all claims and accusations may be valid. Individuals who are facing charges of domestic violence need to be aware of their legal rights and options. A false accusation can lead to severe penalties and a damaged reputation that can adversely affect a person’s personal and professional life. While accusations should be handled seriously out of sensitivity to an alleged victim, charges should be fully investigated to see if they are factual.
